Learning About Children’s Writing Genres

family10

There are a large amount of African American writers who have made their fame and fortune by writing books for children. Thankfully the stigma that used to accompany writing children’s literary books has faded a great deal, as writers are beginning to realize that they can make children extremely happy and that they can also help them to gain a love of reading by writing a great piece of work. Take a gander at J.K. Rowling or Stephanie Meyer and you’ll see two writers who have managed to single-handedly change the way that children and pre-teen books are viewed by the industry. If you’re an African American author and you’re thinking about writing a children’s book, you should learn a bit more about the writing genres before you undertake your task.

All the Genres

There are a large number of genres in children’s writing, and the first one that you may know are picture books. Picture books are the books that are written by African American writers which also have illustrations in them. A true picture book not only has illustrations but is where the illustrations are the core part of the book. The illustrated work should be able to tell the story without any words being necessary. There are all sorts of different types of picture books, from stories for babies to ones for children who are between the ages of 4 and 8. As a kid gets older, the stories become less about pictures and more about reading.

After children have grown out of the picture book phase, they’re next into what are called early chapter books, or transition books. These books are stories for children who are between the ages of 6 and 10 and are books that are easy to read but that focus less on the pictures in the story and more on the writing itself, and they can be tricky to write. There are many an African American author who has believed that they had what it took to write this genre of children’s books but who found that they were unable to create something children would love, so don’t be ashamed if you try but can’t succeed.

Then there are books for middle grade, and books for young adults. These books are often much easier for African American writers to write because they’re very much like writing books for adults. If you’re temped to try writing books for children, you may want to start with this type of work.

How Can Mothers Deal With Baby Often Drooling

family6

When the baby grows teeth, they usually drool. Watching the spray dots of saliva, mothers are also very troubled. Then for the baby often drooling, how can mothers properly care it?

General baby from 4 months after birth may be drooling, this is because the baby at this time gradually improves the development and function of salivary glands, saliva secretion gradually increased, while the baby cannot swallow the saliva to the stomach and cannot like adults or older kids to spit saliva if necessary.

Although the skin of baby contain too much water, it is easier to be affected by outside influence. If there has been water in the low jaw, or in the face, and which is not wiped to keep dry, the baby is prone to suffer from eczema. Therefore, if parents see your baby drool, you should try to use toilet paper to lightly wipe, but do not rub powerfully to avoid broke. Because excessive saliva exist in the mouth and throat, whether it is day or night, we always hear the water sound in their throat, and when baby lies down or changes the position, this sound maybe is increased, sometimes, it always is accompanied by cough. In fact, these are normal phenomenon. With the increasing age of children, they will gradually learn to swallow the saliva, and then this phenomenon will be turned well and disappear.

In general, baby will grow the first tooth when it is at the age of six months. After the occurrence of the first tooth, parents should do oral health well for baby. Parents can buy those teeth brush which can be covered on the fingers, and the material is silica gel, to gently massage the tooth of baby; or use clean gauze to wrap on the fingers of mother to help baby wipe the tooth bed or tooth. Or after baby eating, parents give your baby to drink some water.

In this period, baby will have the habit of sucking fingers, which often makes parents worried about. Because from the view of parents, sucking fingers is very dirty, then some parents even coat some pepper sauce on the baby’s finger to force baby not to suck the finger. In fact, this practice is not correct. Because baby sucking fingers can promote the coordination action of baby’s hands and eyes, with the maturity of baby, they will stop sucking fingers. Therefore, parents should coordinate with baby to suck fingers. As long as keep baby’s fingers clean, and pay attention to clean their hands, and shave nails for baby, parents can rest assured that baby suck their fingers.

The Special Psychological Phenomenon of Single Parent Children

family17

In modern society, more and more children belong to single parent families, and these children more or less have some abnormal psychology affected by parental separation. So, what are the particular psychological phenomenons of these children?

Loneliness Single-parent children, especially who live with his father or live in the reorganized families have limited communication due to fathers’ carelessness or the gap between step-parents. They will feel they are extra in the family and produce loneliness. They often have fewer communications with others.

Uncertain about future Everyone has its own self-esteem and confidence, and they could build confidence and establish life goals under the right guidance. However, without adequate guidance, some children of single-parent families could not establish correct outlook on life, cannot design blueprints for a better life, or even have no real ideal. They will feel lost about what to pursue and what to choose. They even have not thought about these issues and have no clear direction in life.

Psychological inversion Some children may feel disgraceful because of their divorced parents. They are often discriminated by classmates and produce a disgusting sense to families. They do not like to talk to parent and even regard what parents said as wrong. This psychological inversion may be transferred to teachers, classmates and the whole society.

Self-abased They are quite and never talk about anything about their parents. When they fill forms, they often hide the family situation. Some of these children have the beautiful and lofty ideals, and some even have hard struggle to change the environment, but the self-abased psychology cannot realize the coordinated development of their own ideals. Self-abased psychology even influences imagination and creativity, which belongs to an unhealthy psychological phenomenon.

Self-centered Due to lack of discipline, some children do not accept their stepparents’ discipline, they form the self-centered characteristics. They only think of themselves and never put others into consideration. These children often ignore others’ feelings and do not care about others.

If parents or teachers find that children have such psychology and performance, they should guide them actively and timely to avoid more serious psychological problems.

Organic Baby Needs

family9

Baby has many needs and most of them can be provided with the use of organic products. By using organic baby products you can be sure that baby will not come into any contact with products that might have been immersed in poisons that can still emit toxic fumes or cause skin irritations. Rashes and eczema often become problems of the past once mothers change over to organic clothing and other products.

While most clothing comes into contact with baby’s tender skin, but the new mother may not realize that other products also come into contact with baby. Babies tend to put everything they touch into their mouths, so it’s vital that these things do not contain carcinogens of any kind. These things can be soft or hard toys, rattles, chewable teething products, and other things such as salves and sunscreens. Baby nappies are of particular interest here, since they are securely fastened around a most delicate area. Using organic nappies will ensure that your baby is not harmed in any way.

Another area that may be forgotten is the cleaning process. If bibs and other clothes are washed in certain toxic products such as bleach to get stains out, and then baby puts those things in his mouth, then how do we know there is not some small residue of the cleaning agent left in the material? How much better it is to be really sure you don’t poison your baby by using products that are eco-friendly.

Not only have they not harmed the environment when they were made and disposed of, but they cannot harm your baby either. And when we think of harming baby, we must also think about products we use on our own skin. How many times has baby put your finger in his mouth? And what about breastfeeding? So the products mothers use to wash their own clothes and skin should be organic as well, for the best protection.

But babies become toddlers who crawl around the floor and investigate everything that they come into contact with. And very often this investigation is done with the mouth. So it is up to mothers to take a good look around the home and see what needs to be changed. Floor wash is particularly important – it will be rubbed into the crawling baby’s hands and knees. So organic baby products now stretch to become organic household products. And it is all worthwhile to ensure your baby keeps optimum health.

The IRS vs Mother Nature

family17

The IRS recently met its match in the form of Mother Nature. Yes, the massive flooding in Washington, D.C., took out the IRS headquarters.

The IRS vs Mother Nature

As you know, Washington, D.C. suffered through some serious flooding problems recently. The headquarters of the IRS are located at 1111 Constitution Avenue and took a beating. Nobody messes with the IRS and comes out on top, except for Mother Nature.

The record rainfalls in Washington did a lot of damage. In the case of the headquarters of the IRS, the damage was massive. While the building didn’t fall, the internal systems were more or less wiped out. This includes the loss of electrical systems, the heating system, the cooling systems and much more.

Apparently ignoring the possibility of water penetration, all major systems were located in the basement of the building. At the height of the flooding, the depth of the water in the basement was roughly 20 FEET. As you can imagine, this was not good for the systems. In fact, we the people will pay tens of millions of dollars to have everything fixed so we can be taxed efficiently. How ironic.

Alas, the damage caused to the headquarters of the IRS does not impact you and I on a practical scale. As you know from sending in your tax returns to the various odd addresses around the country, tax returns are not processed in Washington. Put in practical terms, this means you still need to file your taxes. IRS computer systems have redundancy, so they still know you are out there and have money they can collect.

No doubt you are worried about our friends at the IRS. No need to fear. They government has big plans to rebuild the IRS headquarters so water can’t consume everything in the basement. In typical government methodology, this will only take six months according to projections. Can you imagine a private business sitting around and twiddling its thumbs for so long?

In truth, it has been a rough couple of years for the IRS. First, one of their trucks accidentally dropped thousands of tax returns into San Francisco Bay and now this. It would appear the agency has met its match in the form of Mother Nature. Perhaps they can file an extension with her before the next storm! Given the fact that the IRS building was only one of five government buildings in D.C. to be damaged, the extension would probably be denied.

Can I Lift Weights While Pregnant

family12

Weight training during pregnancy offers innumerable benefits to the mother and the future baby. It can be quite helpful during pregnancy but one of its important benefits can be realized soon after childbirth. Think of all the lifting you will do with baby. Weight training exercises can serve as a controlled, modified, cardiovascular workout for the pregnant woman.

If you already include weight lifting in your exercise regime, one of your concerns may be how to adapt weight lifting into your newly demanding body. During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin increases and loosens joints. This loosening allows ligaments and tendons in the pelvis to stretch in preparation for delivery. However, relaxin loosens joints all over the body. Because of this, there is a higher risk of incurring injury if free weights are used. If you choose to continue using free weights during this period, then remember to pay close attention to good body mechanics and correct posture.

Women, who are generally active with normal pregnancies, and have an existing weight lifting regime, can continue to lift weights all throughout their pregnancy. However, if you have never had a weight lifting regime, consider starting slowly. Learn the correct positioning and then gradually add weights in to your routine. It’s always a good idea to review your exercise regimen with your doctor or midwife first. The keys to reaping all the benefits are: 1. Working with a professional Prenatal Instructor is always advisable when starting out. If you are a newbie, it is always advisable to seek out fitness centers or instructors that are trained or certified to work with a pregnant women’s need. 2. Be sure to use slow, controlled movements where muscle is lifting the weight. Try not to use momentum If you are new to weight training, practice by using resistance bands first. They will work the muscle groups effectively, and you have to use slow, controlled movements.

3. Good posture and body mechanics are vital. Weight bearing exercise affects balance. Pregnant women experience a shift in the center of gravity with the growth of the uterus and their breasts. 4. As your pregnancy progresses, think about not increasing the weight, but rather increase the repetitions (and perhaps decreasing the weight if you are struggling).

5. Beginning in the second trimester, sit down to lift weights. (Try sitting on a stability ball for an added challenge.) You should avoid lifting weights while standing still. Also, avoid lying on a flat bench to lift. This may leave you in a position where your abdomen is vulnerable to a falling weight. 6. Avoid the Valsalva maneuver (forcefully exhaling without actually releasing air).

Template For The Child Custody Schedule In The Parenting Plan

family7

A parenting plan is a document that divorced and separated parents make to ensure that their children will be cared for when the parents are no longer together. The plan contains all of the information that the parents need for providing for and caring for he children. A big part of the plan is the schedule that shows when the child is with each parent. This schedule is called the custody schedule, and it is one of the most important parts of the plan. To help parents make this vital section, here is a template to follow to make the custody schedule.

The first part of the template requires that the parents decide who the child will live with. Parents can choose to have the child live primarily with one parent, or the parents can both have times when the child lives with them. This decision should be based on what is best for the child. Where the child lives determines how the custody schedule will be set up.

After the residence of the child is determined, the parents can make a repeating cycle of custody and visitation. Basically, the mother and father should make a schedule for a few weeks that outlines when the child will be with each parent. Then, the parents take this short schedule and repeat it throughout the year. This is the foundation for the custody schedule.

The next part of the template is the holiday schedule. The holiday schedule overrides the normal custody schedule and shows where the child will be on those special days. The mother and father can choose to include whatever holidays they want, and they can divide holiday time in whatever way works best for their situation. Some parents like to split the day of the holiday in half, while other parents like to alternate holidays. Again, this schedule should be made with the child’s benefit in mind.

Lastly, the parents should add vacation time and special events into the schedule. Parents can mark in time when the mother and father can take the child on vacation. The mother and father can also mark in special times when the normal custody schedule has to change.

By following this template, a mother and father can make a good custody schedule for their parenting plan. If parents take the time to make a good schedule from the start, it can save a lot of hassle later on. A good schedule can also help the child adjust to the new circumstances.

Drug Addiction Recovery for Pregnant Women

family9

When a pregnant woman is suffering from drug addiction, the situation is more serious because the effects of drug use not only applies to her, but her fetus is facing danger as well. Its quite likely that when the child is born, it will suffer from bad health from day one.

Illegal drug taking can cause many health problems for pregnant female, such as hepatitis, anemia, sexually transmitted diseases, skin, hard and blood infections etc. Because the baby gets access to those illegal drugs indirectly, its quite possible that the baby will be born with illness as well. For example, research has shown that if a mother use heroin during her pregnancy, her baby might suffer from low birth weight. If children are exposed to marijuana or cocaine, they might suffer from attention deficiency, slowness in learning and behavioral problems. When exposed to methamphetamine, babies can suffer from poor quality of movement, fetal growth restriction and decreased arousal.

Another bad effect of drug addiction for pregnant women is the psychosocial effect. Pregnant female using illicit drugs often feel guilty, shame, denial, loneliness and embarrassment. The fear of being found and arrested can make them anxious and even depressed.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 4.3% of pregnant women recently used illicit drugs. Also according to that survey, pregnant female in the 15 to 25 age group are more prone to illicit drug use and cigarettes smoking than those in the 26 to 44 age group.

Fortunately, there are some treatment options for pregnant women with drug addiction and one can find many addiction treatment centers that can help pregnant female as well. The main treatment methods include: 1) Medications: For example, methadone maintenance combined with prenatal care and a comprehensive drug treatment program is an effective treatment method. 2) Behavioral Treatments: For example, motivational incentive approaches appear to be effective in treating pregnant women with nicotine, cocaine, opiate dependence. 3) Comorbidity: Study has shown that pregnant women with psychological problems are more prone to substance abuse, and vice-versa. Therefore, treatment focusing on this co-occurring pattern can be effective.

Drug addiction is a serious problem. Its more serious for pregnant women. Fighting drug addiction requires determination, discipline and hard work, but its worth the effort. If a pregnant woman is struggling with addiction, she should take it really seriously and seek help and treatment as soon as possible. This is not only for herself, but for the good of her unborn child as well.

Xanax And Valium Pill Slang Every Parent Should Know

family9

With hard drug such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine gaining notoriety amongst teenagers, there is a fast rising epidemic with addictions to mood altering anxiety medications such as Valium and Xanax. As with any drug, there are slang terms every parent should know. Benzodiazepines, also known as benzos, are psychoactive drugs prescribed legally most commonly for anxiety and insomnia. However, self medicating above the prescribed limit will produce addicting euphoric effects. Commonly abused benzodiazepines include Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Atvian (lorazepam) and Klonopin (clonazepam). Because these prescription pills are ingested orally, they leave the users system quickly so early detection is key. Urine drug testing specifically for prescription pills at the first sign of drug use can uncover a hidden addiction.

People have been abusing Valium since the 70s because of the mind numbing relaxation the drug produces, and as such there are many drug slang terms that parents should know. Vs and Vals are some slang terms for Valium based on its name but there are also the terms blues and blue 10s based off of the distinct blue color and strength. Older, dated terms which were once used to describe benzodiazepines pills in general include downers, black out, and goofers. The date rape drug Rohypnol is technically a benzodiazepine, but most know it by the term Roofies.

The slang terminology for Xanax is much more difficult to follow. It is one of the most widely abused prescription drugs by teenagers and as such has a whole range of terms. These include Zannies, bars (based off their distinct bar form), and footballs which is based off of their dosage. Xanax can be eaten orally or for the more advanced user, the preferred method is to crush the football shaped bars into a powder and to snort the chemical powder.

Specifically engineered to alter the chemical composition of the brain, an addiction to Valium, Xanax and other benzodiazepines is just as destructive as any other drug addiction. The body becomes dependent on the pills to maintain homeostasis and feelings of normalcy after prolonged usage. Other side effects of long term use include severe depression, mental instability and suicidal tendencies. Parents are strongly urged to drug test at the first signs of benzodiazepine abuse including sudden mood swings, unwarranted apathy, or angry outbursts. There are Xanax drug tests available for simple home use to help confirm drug use. Physical symptoms of Valium and Xanax abuse result in excessive sleeping, sluggish movements, slurred speech, lethargy and delayed reactions. Teenage benzodiazepine produces effects similar to excessive alcohol abuse. Teens using the drugs are just as susceptible to car crashes as a drunk driver due to the slow bodily movements and reaction times. Parents can effectively prevent their children from prescription pill abuse by paying careful attention to the slang terms of Xanax and Valium and then immediate drug testing at the first signs of abuse.

family12

There can be no better deed than helping those in needs. When you will look around or read about the people across the world, you can discover that not all are as well to do as you are. Education-savings plans Coverdell vs. 529

family11

If you are a parent or a relative who is thinking of a great way to save college money for the children in your family, Education Savings Plans may be the right choice for you. There are many things to take into consideration if you’re thinking of participating in one of these. First, you have to choose which plan is right for your family based on your financial needs and goals. In addition, the age (under 18) of the beneficiary or of the student who will benefit from the plans is also critical. Because of these factors, the information presented here is mostly useful for parents or relatives of young children who are looking to save money for future college-related expenses.

The two Education-savings plans, Coverdell education savings account and 529 college savings plans, have some similarities. In both plans, the money that is contributed come from after-tax dollars. This means that the money that is contributed to these plans is subject to income tax before it gets to the account. However, the earnings and withdrawal from Education-savings plans are tax-free as long as the money is used in paying for college tuition, living, and other eligible expenses.

Because the two plans are different in many ways, here are a few things to consider:

Coverdell Education Savings Account

These are Education-savings plans that are sponsored by the federal government. There is an annual limit to the dollar amount contributed into these accounts. However, parents or relatives can set up several accounts at various financial institutions as long as their contribution does not go over the annual limit.

Coverdell savings accounts have its advantages in a sense that contributors/donors have the flexibility to choose which types of investments the money will go into. For example, you may invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificate of deposits etc. In this way, you can choose either an aggressive or conservative investment strategy which will depend on how much time you have to invest or how much risk you are willing to take.

529 College Savings Plans

These are Education-savings plans that are sponsored by the state government. Every American state currently offers 529 plans.

Like the Coverdell account, your contributions are not tax-deductible but your withdrawals and earnings are tax-free as long as you use the money for eligible educational expenses. There two types of 529 savings plans and they are savings/investment plans and prepaid tuition.

The savings/investment plan can be compared to a retirement account such as a 401K which is designed to pay for eligible college expenses. As with the Coverdell plan, parents can choose an investment strategy that fits their needs. Furthermore, parents usually don’t have to be a resident in a particular state to open these Education-savings plans. In this way, parents can search for better deals and will have several colleges to choose from.

Parisian Parents Seek Solace In The Teddy Bear Trust

family21

Parisian parents welcome the Teddy Bear Trust for addressing childrens anxieties when being admitted to the hospital.

The Teddy Bear Trust will seek to be able to hand out a free teddy bear to every child whos admitted to a hospital in Paris. The teddy bear will bring comfort to the child, while doctors and nurses can also use the teddy bear as a proxy when explaining the illness and medical procedures to the child. Also, the teddy bear can act as a substitute parent or comrade when the parents arent able to be at the hospital, or when it is occasionally too hard to be there to comfort a perhaps seriously ill child.

Psychologists have applauded mr. Bjorn Stiedl, Danish repeat entrepreneur and businessman, for having come up with the Teddy Bear Trust (Foundation Ours en Peluche). After the idea was first aired a couple of months ago, Parisian parents have heard rumours of the Teddy Bear Trust, and are beginning to ask healthcare workers if they know anything about it, and if there is a teddy bear for their child.

Mr. Stiedl comments that, this clearly shows the need for a project such as this. For a child, being hospitalized is not only about getting well but about getting through the entire experience unscathed. And trust me, a one-month hospitalization for a five-year-old is virtually a life-long experience. Having a teddy bear to share the experience with may very well be more efficient than God knows how many pain-killers, Mr. Stiedl concludes.

Patrick, father to a 4-year-old daughter who has been in the hospital for three weeks suffering from Meningitis, was thrilled about the idea: Thank God my daughter is getting better, but having had a teddy bear comrade in the past three weeks would have been ideal. She has been going in and out of consciousness, and it wasnt always that her mother or I could be here. We have three other kids and live in the suburbs outside Paris, and its not really advisable to travel between Paris and home after nightfall. And if she was awake at night, there was no-one to look after her. With the Teddy Bear Trust, there could have been, Patrick finishes.

The Teddy Bear Trust expects to be able to hand out the first teddy bears before summer.

Every Child Needs To Be Heard…

family

Although India is known to be a culturally diverse country, there are many issues which have not yet reached a resolution. Some of these include poverty and illiteracy, two of the main causes for many other plaguing issues. As a result of these two problems, many young and innocent children suffer. They are not only denied the warmth and love every child deserves but also grow up with the impression that they did not deserve the right to be treated like a human being.

They grow up in fear and are in no position to defend themselves as a result of their economic plight. Furthermore, their parents are not even financially equipped to send them to schools to receive a basic education. They are forced into labour and their growth is hampered for the rest of their lives. They perform menial jobs, often involving long hours only to be rewarded with very meagre amounts of compensation. These children are given no freedom of their own and their fundamental rights of survival literally become non-existent. They are deprived of a basic education and the bare requirements of a healthy childhood.

Child Rights are those inherent rights which are guaranteed to every human being regardless to his caste, creed, sex, status of colour. It ensures equality of opportunity and covers multiple needs and issues of the child. It is through the Indian Constitution that many rights of a child are guaranteed. Some of the basic rights of children include; the right to education, expression, information, nutrition, health and care, protection from abuse, protection from exploitation, from neglect, to development, recreation, name and nationality and survival.

In India, however many of these children are denied their basic rights. This is often because of the economic plight that they are in and the inability to help themselves. One of the root factors for this is poverty. It is because they are born into poverty that they do not have the knowledge or ability to proclaim these rights. The parents, too who are struggling cannot raise this issue as the demands for survival are very high for them.

This leads to unhappy childhoods and lives filled with misery where their lives are aimed at helping their parents bring money back home or to find a meagre meal to survive. Furthermore, they are exploited and abused at all levels.

Many non-profits are continuously fighting to protect their rights through various programs and interventions. Through various donations and other schemes, the lives of many youngsters who have been denied their rights are benefitting.
